One of the important things" to look for on web sites and auction photos is the VERY ABSENCE of the dealers failing to mention:

INCORRECT dials

INCORRECT bows, crowns and hands

SWITCHED

INAPPROPRIATE cases (even if the case screw marks match)

then there is that famous old saying--"Looks original" or "appears correct"

Why can't well known web sellers, eBayers and dealers be honest? (they certainly aren't that ignorant or incompetent, or are they?)

GREED.

Amazing how easy some people sell their soul for just a couple dollars.

I am going to go out on a limb here ( again ) and say that in some ways the hobby itself is partly to blame.

Yes it does all come down to money but take a step back and look at the system we have created.

On the one hand we love original watches and we love to look at them and talk about them and collect them.

Take away one part or change a case or dial and suddenly it becomes crap. We tend to concentrate on the bit that is wrong rather than admiring the other 90% that is still correct.

I am not for one second saying the watch with the switched part is as good but we do seem to go from one extreme to another.

If we had a gentler system of grading the variations from one extreme to the other it might take away some of the incentive for people to forget to mention those things that are not quiet right.

I have always liked the term period correct but you don't see it much because many see it as code for switched which is bad, bad, bad.

Hope this makes sense.

Alas I have no idea how such a change in thinking might be achieved.

Here is another point ALWAYS MISSED--just how many folks actually try to correct switches? Of course, one cannot correct rare cases or ruined plates thru gilding, buffing or bad cleaning.

Where one is buying IT IS WHAT IT IS, unless it can be corrected--how many here try or do corrections?

I will correct obvious ones like an open faced movement in a hunter case or a case that is 50 years newer than the movement it contains but my logic is that it is no longer original anyway so I can't make it any worse and I prefer things period correct.

Anything I think is right or am not sure about I tend to leave as I got it.
