I have just read Mt Osborne's email to me stating that the nat ass has TRASHED the "community" site into the dumpster, claiming all posts, research and members' efforts were destroyed as "out of date"--not withstanding that I posted a few NEW ITEMS just within the past week or so!

So the nat ass (in order to save money?) moved to their own in house server and killed the original community site which now resembles Chernobyl, 'er nothing less than a list of chapter links.

All of the discussion, study and education plus personal posts by those (I guess now) foolish enough to have wasted their time typing, educating and generally collecting and discussing IN FAVOR OF DEALER MEMBERSHIPS, A WORTHLESS HOME PAGE FILLED WITH COMMERCIAL ADS, a POOR BULLETIN and a JOKE OF A MART.

Bottom line--THE NAT ASS CANNOT BE TRUSTED! Therefore, maybe Ben H. is on to something and is absolutely correct in opting out of posting photos (or whatever else any member can think of regarding personal efforts and work) on assoc. sites. (Steve and I have advocated this for years)

Just, yet, another waste of money decisions by that small band of ignoramus insiders within making all the lame decisions creating an organization which has been in steady decline for over 20 years (remember the 38,000 membership of old?). BAD JUDGEMENTS continue on and on by a band of poor operatives. The nat ass sunk reported big money into the community center idea--intelligent operatives would have killed this venue immediately with good judgement that it was destined to be a failure; but, where was any promotion of said site?

TO HELL WITH THE SERIOUS HOROLOGIST MEMBER, WE JUST WANT YOUR EVER INCREASING DUES DOLLARS!

PS WE NEED $$s. Anyone want to buy a calendar?

Just received from Kevin Osborne:

Jon,

"It didn’t make economic sense to retain it, since it was all costing us thousands of dollars a year to support."

So there you have it members--I guess the assoc. is trimming the fat.

However, just how much did it cost to have an emart on the nawcc site? That was trimmed also (a few years ago).

What's next?

What they should be doing is SUPPORTING the Chapters like this one and several others who have an internet presence instead of competing with them and trying to be all things to all people.

Instead they have spent the last number of years killing off the chapters and now when they desperately need them they have been reduced to their knees.

Strong healthy chapters will have a flow on effect to the Nat but they simply can not see that.

All they want is the $ and they have killed the goose.

They have NEVER supported the chapters -

The end result is we will be just be supporters of the Museum.

We REALLY need to spin off and be THE Pocket Watch WebSite for everybody.

True, I just counted only 70 chapters listed remaining out of 195 created--quite a drop as has the membership.

Why don't they just throw in the towel and go "MUSEUM SOCIETY", as I have suggested regularly here on 149--shall I repeat it?

Here, modified slightly..........

A NEW WAVE MUSEUM SOCIETY

After reading a bunch of STREAMS of dialogue, cries, pleas for money, idiotic ideas, gripes, several dues increases, good ideas trashed, begging for money in/on every NAWCC page and bitches on the forum and elsewhere plus RECENT EVENTS AND CONTINUED MANIPULATION BY THE INSIDERS AND CZARS OF THE NAWCC to maintain shut down public axcess to mart activities and the death of the watch school, I am EVEN MORE CONVINCED that:

1. We need to become a MUSEUM oriented group, OR SOCIETY.

2. We need to raise the dues, to say $200.00 per member.

3. We need to nominate someone other than a flipflopper as permanent chairman and retain a horologically oriented individual with MUSEUM and ASSOCIATION background as a permanent Executive VP (someone like Tom Terrific) and forget all this political mess, electioneering, manipulations, infighting & arguing, fixed election process, chest pounding and self promotions, and questionable election tactics! Turn over the control to a real czar who will take a stand on switching, parting out and scrapping watches! And, truly promote horology throughout the USA.

We need to get on with horology and education only!

With the dwindling marts, lousy venues and dates and the goods leaving the NAWCC circle of members and marts to "fleabay", public auctions, flea markets and elsewhere; the fine fellowship within the organization; the zest and zeal of those dwindling remaining members
with intellectual projects and research in mind for their pet projects; the great
increase in monies collected from the dues increases (lose 1/2 of the members but
increase the income from the balance of the remaining half of the members); the saving of postage, paper, work, salaries, and expense); the movement to web horology with less clutter and easier operation;
why not become the WONDERFUL PEOPLE of horology, e.g. the English across the big pond? And add correct English and learn accents to add credibility.

Also, we could have and participate in nice black tie banquets, wear fancy clothes, attend lectures and seminars a la the Longitude Symposium in Boston about 20 years ago which I personally financially supported (This also
resulted a wonderful book by Andrews on Longitude--how many have a copy or even know about it?), have more chapter dinner
parties and less boring (and huckster type) marts, avoid ethics committee arguments and violations, cease dealing with thieving dealers and switchers, parter outers and scrappers, get away from the favortism, even improve our speech and delivery; you know, award members with fellowship for horological achievements, not mart or convention chairmanships, greeters or hospitality "bakers and cookie cutters!"

Occasionally, we could even convene at the occasional public auction. (And for the traders that will jump all over me for this post, we could create or suggest someone like Bryan Eyring to operate a more organized, fewer
and less conflicting regional mart schedule and open them up to the public, say 4 times annually in all parts of the USA, E, W, N, and S.)

We would not violate our very special by-laws---this could all prove to be a win, win situation for us and the association!

I support a dues increase and I support this "new wave" museum society of wonderfulness and bipartisanship and leave the trading to the auction houses, fleabay, flea markets, World Wide Traders shows places like the FREE and INDEPENDENT Web Horology!

Jon Hanson, NAWCC #8801 and 65 year collector of horological artifacts & 49 year association member

IN SUMMATION: I support a healthy dues increase for increased revenue, a reduction of expenses (as outlined above), professionally members' club run without marts and operated by a czar and a more intellectual, sensitive, and gentile association dealing with horology and away from the self promoters, the egocentric, the liars and cheats and the snake oil salesmen. Leave politics to those who choose to run for US government offices! Let's get back to horology! Support Tom Terrific as our new chairman of the NEW MUSEUM SOCIETY and name it The American Horological Society!

If they stopped trying to compete with the chapters and embraced the idea of promoting and supporting them they could create a TRADERS AND DEALERS Chapter.
This could become a place dedicated to trading.
It could run things like the Mart and the regionals and hopefully a strong internet site devoted to trading watches and clocks.

This would separate trading from the national and leave it to promote and pursue the more purist side of collecting and research.

We need both things but oft times the 2 aims clash.

This was already tried and squashed--remember the WW chapter run by the late BURLEY BULLOCK.

That chapter crested the best venues for marts ever--all run by Burley's wife Olga.

The assoc killed it.

My point exactly.

That is what has to change.

There are lots of people out there with good ideas that need help and support.

Not competition and resistance.

If the good ideas do not come from insiders and operatives or their "yes" men, they are ignored and trashed.

if all of the good ideas over the years were listened to and used the nawcc would not be facing the membership and money problems it now faces
