The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.
Jean Piaget
Dear NAWCC Friends and Members:

Education is our theme today!

The NAWCC School of Horology Education Programming at HQ is going through a vigorous re-evaluation and re-programming to discover how to deliver its products and services in a way that best serves not only our current membership, but our future membership and the general public at-large. Part of that process involves examining and engaging with our educators, our instructors, and our Chapters who are discovering ways to improve and enhance our workshops.

One example of HQ interacting with the learning resources throughout our membership is with Chapter 190. They have found a successful way to add new membership to the NAWCC and increase the number of participants in their Chapter with a new workshop called the “Bridge to Membership.” It is a public outreach, 2-day workshop that has been proven successful with a 30% return on adding new members. The workshop is titled “Introduction to Antique Clock Collecting, Repair & Maintenance.”

The workshop has only one prerequisite: the enrollee must bring “Interest & Curiosity.” The workshop materials and core course are designed, prepared, and taught by NAWCC volunteer member, Lex Rooker. Other supporting sessions of the course include “The Story of Horology,” prepared by Ken McWilliams and “Clock Collecting, Evaluations, Purchasing, and Documenting” by Mike Schmidt.

The premise of the workshop is to offer a non-intimidating, introductory workshop as an out- reach to the general public, but also open to existing and lapsed NAWCC members. Since February 2013, they have completed 13 of these workshops. The results: 109 students, with an average of 8 students per course, completing the workshop with 35 students becoming new NAWCC members and 40 students becoming Chapter 190 members. Over 30% of the participant’s progress and sign up for more learning. Chapter 190 is also seeing additional benefits including the injection of a younger and more diversified membership.

The program charges a minimum tuition of $100 for the two days with all tools and materials supplied by the Chapter. Interest is generated thru local adverting in area newspapers and word of mouth. Other suggested means of promotion is thru a Chapter’s Facebook and other social media postings; leaflets distributed to local vendors and shops; postings in libraries, coffee shops, local cafes, places of worship and public gatherings, and customized bumper stickers and tee shirts! Be creative!

If you or your Chapter are interested in this workshop and want to learn more, please contact the dedicated instructor, Lex Rooker (email lex_rooker@usinter.net) or Mike Schmidt (eaglecreekclocks@msn.com). As a shout out, Lex has donated numerous hours of his time and out-of- pocket costs in total support of this public outreach educational program and in his commitment to seeing the NAWCC grow and thrive in its educational mission. A shout out also goes to Mike, Ken, and Chapter 190 for their support of this program and for the whole NAWCC as well.

Closing on another education quote:

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Nelson Mandela
TIME to ACT NOW!
Educate yourself about the candidates running for the Board and for the NEC; learn about what we have done and what we plan on doing for our horological community and help us change and grow the NAWCC!

The 2019 NAWCC election ends Monday, April 1st at midnight. We are voting on three (3) NAWCC Board Directors and one (1) Nominating and Elections Committee Member. The Nominating and Elections Committee (NEC) worked very hard to find some of the most qualified members that will be shaping the NAWCC for the next four years. The candidate resumes are posted on line and appeared in the January/February Watch and Clock Bulletin. For viewing on line, go to nawcc.org front page to the banner announcing the election.

YOUR vote is VERY important to the future governance of the NAWCC Association. If you have not voted, please go on line and vote your choice. If you have voted, please accept our "Thank You" for your sincere interest in the future of the NAWCC.

TIME TO GIVE TO OUR WORK
The Partners in Time Annual Appeal TODAY March 31st. We would greatly appreciate any of those in a position to participate, to send in your contributions and donations to make our Appeal deliver a successful, record breaking one. Thank you for supporting our work and efforts as we do our best to raise the bar in results and outcomes for our members and the NAWCC community. Your supporting this annual appeal has been VERY encouraging and GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Board Members:
NAWCC Board Chair Rich Newman had the pleasure of attending an Ottawa Valley Chapter meeting, giving a lecture on Watch Papers, and spending time with their officers, President Don Purchase, VP Kevin West, Editor Gary Fox, Secretary Paul Sonnichsen, and Treasurer Ray Springer. A highlight of his March visit was a trip to see The Canadian Clock Museum in Deep River, Ontario that is managed by Allan Symons. First photograph has Allan on the Left and Rich on the right with a number of very rare Canadian tall case clocks in the background including a Twiss and Clement. The second shows a number of tall case clocks made by the Pequegnat Clock Company with Allan and host Gary Fox in the foreground.

Some of the exciting events we have coming up this year, at our Columbia, PA location include:
April 13th - “NAWCC Clockwork Festival,” NAWCC Museum, Columbia, PA. An all-day event to entertain, educate, and introduce horology to enthusiasts of the Maker movement, Steampunk, Automatons and Autonoma, and all kinetic and gear related technology, engineering, art, science, and history. Education includes “Ask a Horologist” sessions hosted by many of our participating member horologists, 2-3 panel presentations on the connection between and how to make horology and autonoma - steampunk -creative gear contraptions, and the historic technology of Rose Engine turning, demonstrated by Dave Lindow and Roland Murphy, with audience hands-on experience. Entertainment will include displays of creative contraptions, in addition to a Steampunk band, pop-up performances on a variation of the Stroh violin that has been called “the most steampunk musical instrument ever seen,” and cosplay creator/performers featured throughout the day. Introductions to horology include curators from the Morris Museum, the finest public collection of Autonoma in North America, the creator of AutomatoCon Festival, Brett King, and exquisite exhibits of the finest examples of French Industrial, turn of the century clocks from private collections. Food, drinks, contests and more await the inquisitive attendee. http://wp.nawcc.org/clockfest/
June 27-30 – 2019 NAWCC National Convention, Springfield, MA
July 6th - Exhibit Opening Event– “Timeless Testaments: Civil War Watches and the Men Who Carried Them” NAWCC Museum, Columbia, PA. On display will be 16 unique watches (and other civil war battlefield artifacts) with documented provenances linking them to Civil War participants. Several were presented and/or used during the recipients’ war service. Several others were presented after the individual’s war service had ended, as grateful tributes by comrades in arms with whom the recipient had faced hardships and lethal peril. A sampling of other watches from the Civil War period, both domestic and foreign, provide a perspective of the kinds of watches likely to have been found in the pockets of Civil War soldiers, both privates and generals, both Union and Confederate.
October 3-5 - Exhibit Opening Event - “S-TOWN HOROLOGY: AN EXHIBIT CELEBRATING THE TIMELESS TALENTS OF John B. McLemore” , NAWCC Museum, Columbia, PA. This exhibit is a licensed partnership with S-Town, which will exclusively display never seen before artifacts and personal items of the featured character from This American Life, Serial Productions, Brian Reed produced, seven chapter podcast, “S-Town.” S-Town follows an Alabaman horologist named John B. McLemore, who sent an email to the creators of This American Life, back in 2012, asking for help in a murder investigation. This led Brian Reed, producer of the podcast to McLemore's hometown of Woodstock and kicked off a series of events that feature family feuds, hidden treasure and a puzzling mystery, all emanating from John B.’s personal, end-of-life story.
John B. McLemore was a former NAWCC member and world renowned, clockmaker and clock restorer. One of John B.’s podcast featured friends and clients, “Bill,” is also an NAWCC member and is graciously loaning 45 priceless timepieces that John B. restored and maintained for Bill. Also in the exhibit will be John B.’s personal items and personal photographs. Joining Brian Reed and Bill will be other characters from the podcast, including Rita, and Woodstock residents. S-Town has been a huge success, with more than 40 million downloads in its first month and over 110 Million downloads since its March, 2017 launch. Many critics declared it the best podcast of 2017. There will be a commemorative exhibit book for sale by the museum.
ONE MORE TIME....AND LAST TIME TO ACT

MAKE TIME TO… VOTE NOW...YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT, APRIL 1ST!

SHARING OUR STORIES OF TIME IN THE NAWCC COMMUNITY

THERE ARE STORIES AMONG OUR COMMUNITIES THAT BEAR REPEATING FOR ALL TO HEAR AND APPRECIATE. WHETHER IT BE FROM OUR CHAPTERS, MEMBERS, OTHER HOROLOGICAL INSTITUTIONS, OR AMONG THOSE WHO APPRECIATE AND SUPPORT THE NAWCC AND HOROLOGY, OUR STORIES ARE THE BACKBONE OF OUR EXISTENCE AND RELEVANCE IN HISTORY AND SOCIETY. IF YOU HAVE A NOTABLE ANECDOTE, TALE, NARRATIVE OR ACCOUNT, PLEASE SEND IT ALONG IN LEGIBLE AND PRINTABLE FORM FOR ME TO CUT AND PASTE IT HERE, WITH YOUR PERMISSION. THANK YOU.

Given time and length challenges, I will re-print some items called “REWINDS” These are important items that continue to be updated or reprinted so as not to be forgotten.
