So I found myself in Tucson, AZ yesterday and this morning. When I hit town I had a couple of hours so I went to a couple of vintage jewelry and gold buying places. Had some good talks with people but struck out at every place. There was one place left on my list and it was getting late so I just called them. They told me they get a lot of watches but that they had nothing right now. I gave up for the evening and drove across town to my hotel. When I got to the hotel I noticed that the last place I had called was right across the street. I decided to go over there anyway.
I struck up a conversation with the owner who initially said again that he didn't have much. After 5 minutes he said OK, I just remembered something and he went to the big walk in safe. He came back with a 16s Rockford in the practically new and deeply hand chased case below. The 14k case is heavy as hell. It has perfect springs and hinges and really looks to be unused. As a bonus it is in a Rockford marked hinged wood box like one of the wood Keystone Howard boxes (no paperwork unfortunately). This is a hotel room iPhone picture. I will take some better pix when I get my lights set up again.
I had to pay a bit more than melt but I don't see these hand chased cases in this kind of condition every day. Oh well...it's only money.

John,
Absolutely beautiful in every way-mint! Show us pictures of the dial and movement. How does it run?? It really is a plus that you can visit lots of vintage jewely shops in the west and midwest.

Scott,
The watch is a 16s pendant set 17 jewel Rockford bridge model with a double sunk RN dial. The dial seems to have a couple of very light hairlines but I will have to wait to get it home before I get more pix. The back is too tight to open without a good knife and I don't carry one when I fly.
In other words it is an OK watch in a great case...the way of the world. |

The cool and not so cool thing about this is that the guy who had it was a 3d generation jeweler. He knew that the watch was too nice to melt. The not cool thing is that he didn't really need the money and didn't really have an overriding need to sell the watch...so I paid up for it. The good or bad thing about it is that I had the cash on me.

Big Kahuna, you have told me several times that, no matter how much cash you have, you need to be careful how and when you use it. These are wise words. |

Yes, I did!
And, always be conservative and cautious but ready to pounce when the opportunity presents itself. |

Pocket and wrist watch stars are having zero problem fetching enormous sums. The market may be down for the pedestrian piece, but brother it is not down for the better quality items. A spectacular price on the chronodrometer realized at J&H, among others...
